Communities Week 2017

This week is Community Week 2017, “celebrating the positive change led by communities across England”. What a great time acknowledge the work that we and our partners do, to improve local community facilities.  Whilst providing safe, decent and affordable housing, HfH Homes have always had a focus community projects. These projects involve anything from general maintenance of an adventure playground to painting and decorating of women’s refuges. Although housing has and always will be our focus, we understand the importance of supporting and revitalising local community facilities. Last year we completed three community projects with the help of our corporate volunteers. The first was completing one of three refuges for women who have suffered from domestic violence, run by our partner charity Housing for Women in South East London. The painting and decorating of the refuge was completed by 40 volunteers. Thank you to our corporate partners McGuire Woods London, FitFlop, Zuora, Phillips 66 and SEI Investments who helped to make the communal areas have a fresh, brighter and welcoming...

National Apprenticeship week- An interview with Jason Roberts by Kaia Ita

National Apprenticeship Week is designed to ‘celebrate apprenticeships and the positive impact they have on individuals, businesses in the wider economy’. HfH Homes also share in this celebration and understand the importance of apprenticeships and the experience, confidence and skills they can provide an individual with. In 2015 we employed Jason Roberts as an apprentice, and I had the chance to interview him about his experience. Jason is currently studying a NVQ in Site Carpentry. When I asked why he chose to do his apprenticeship with HfH Homes, Jason explained that with HfH Homes he would be able to cover all aspects of carpentry work and this would then enable him to further his career whilst completing his apprenticeship. Jason also needs to complete coursework outside of working hours to ensure that he meets his course deadlines. He told me that working on site whilst attending college can be difficult, but he looks forward to each week, to see what it brings. I asked...

International Women’s Day, a global day celebrating the social, economic, political and cultural achievements of women. A day to recognise bias and inequality against women, campaign for women’s education and against violence. Once we acknowledge these core issues and biases, then we can champion for change.  In acknowledgement of the substantial role gender inequality plays in the home, land and home ownership rights, Habitat for Humanity places great significance on women empowerment and advocacy for women’s right worldwide. In Great Britain, HfH Homes also support the empowerment of women through hosting women build weeks and supporting partner charities such as Hibiscus Initiatives and Housing for Women to provide safe, decent and affordable homes and improved community facilities for women in need. Hibiscus Initiatives, one of our newest partners, a charity working with marginalised Black and Minority Ethnic Foreign National and Migrant offenders and detainees in custody, detention and the community. The charity engages and works with clients to support and empower them in addressing and dealing with their multiple complex...
