About Us

Thank you for taking the time to visit our website. We hope that you find it a useful place to start discovering how Habitat for Humanity’s global mission, to give everybody a decent and affordable place to call home, is taking place in Great Britain and, in particular, in London.

We work in partnership with a wide range of groups – from local authorities and housing associations through to some of the biggest corporate names in London. However, we believe the most important partners we have are the enthusiastic individuals who volunteer with us to make a real difference to people who are in housing need.

Our History

An affiliate of Habitat for Humanity International, Southwark Habitat for Humanity was founded in 1996 by a group of local people who were concerned about housing in London and were passionate in their belief that communities needed to be active in providing solutions to the housing problems they face.  Habitat for Humanity Homes (our new name)  is a local, voluntary sector response to housing, working outside the traditional mechanisms of supply in the public and private sectors. At its heart, Habitat for Humanity Homes is a movement grounded in the local community and a vehicle through which communities can respond to the need for projects on their doorstep.

Early Projects

In its early years, we completed sixteen affordable housing units in Peckham, south London, helping low income families achieve sustainable home ownership. In 2009, we also completed work on the ‘Star of India’, a block of twelve one and two-bedroom flats developed on the site of the former Star of India public house in Peckham. This now provides social rented accommodation for twelve local families.

These projects were foundational to developing the charity’s local response and reputation and as a result we are expanding both our new-build and refurbishment programmes, along with an increasing ability to undertake more corporate-sponsored projects for other charities.

Please do consider supporting our work either financially, or with practical assistance offering your time or skills as a volunteer. We would be very pleased to partner to have you partner with us in meeting the need for affordable housing in Great Britain today.
